The Hollywood Foreign Press Association on Saturday revealed that Jorge Camara, past president of the organization, has died.
News of his death was shared in an internal memo by the HFPA, which indicated that Camara had been battling health issues in recent years.
“It is with great regret that I have to let you know of the passing of our dear friend and colleague Jorge Camara,” said the HFPA memo. “Jorge passed away peacefully yesterday afternoon after struggling with health issues for the past few years. As a past president of the HFPA, he was instrumental in the success of our association. Many of you have worked closely with him, and we know you will join in our sorrow.”
Camara spent six years as president of the HFPA and took on many roles with the organization over more than 40 years. As a producer, he worked in various capacities for Telemundo productions.
Originally from Mérida, Mexico, Camara studied journalism in Mexico City before making his way to Los Angeles to pursue a career writing about film. His editor in Mexico at the time, where he was writing for three publications, sent a letter of recommendation to former HFPA president Miguel de Zárraga, a Spanish correspondent, and Camara became a member shortly thereafter. One of his first interviews as a member was with Bette Davis on the set of Hush … Hush, Sweet Charlotte.
Camara served as a critic for La Opinión and a Hollywood correspondent for the Dominican Republic weekly Pandora and contributed to other publications including Woman’s Day (Australia), Burda Publications (Germany), La Mujer De Hoy (Mexico) and TV Todo (Mexico).
In 1993, Camara won the International Media Award from the Publicists Guild of America for his contribution to international journalism. He was nominated for a Primetime Emmy in 2018 for executive producing the Golden Globes.
