Netflix has cut short the mission of its drama series Away.
The streamer has canceled the show, starring Hilary Swank as an astronaut leading a Mars mission, after a single season. The move comes about six weeks after the show’s Sept. 4 debut.
Away performed solidly for Netflix in the United States. The Universal TV-produced series ranked among the streamer’s top 10 series for much of September, according to Netflix’s own rankings, including holding the No. 1 spot for several days after its release.
Nielsen’s streaming rankings, meanwhile, said Netflix users watched more than 2.7 billion minutes of the series over its first two-plus weeks of release — third among Netflix series in that time period, behind Cobra Kai and Lucifer. (Netflix has said that Nielsen’s measurement doesn’t necessarily reflect the full audience for its shows, as it includes only TV-set viewing in the United States, and not viewers watching on other devices or in other countries.) Netflix weighs a show’s cost versus its global audience in making renewal and cancellation decisions.
Andrew Hinderaker created Away and executive produced with showrunner Jessica Goldberg, Jason Katims, Matt Reeves, Edward Zwick, Swank, Adam Kassan and Jeni Mulein.
The show’s cast also features Josh Charles, Talitha Bateman, Vivan Wu, Mark Ivanir, Ato Essandoh and Ray Panthaki.
Away becomes the latest one-and-done casualty at Netflix, joining the likes of The Dark Crystal: Age of Resistance, Soundtrack and Messiah, along with I Am Not Okay With This and The Society — both of which had renewals rescinded because of COVID-19 concerns.
Deadline first reported the news.
