NBC is adding a second Canadian drama to its 2020-21 schedule.
The network has acquired rights to Nurses in a competitive market. The medical show from Entertainment One and ICF Films follows five young nurses on the front lines of a busy city hospital. The series aired on Canada’s Global TV earlier this year and has been renewed for a second season there.
Nurses will follow Transplant south to the United States and eventually take over the latter’s Tuesday time period on NBC. The series will air on Monday nights following The Voice on Dec. 7 and 14, then move to 10 p.m. Tuesdays beginning Jan. 5.
Both Transplant and Nurses are filling in for NBC’s own medical drama, New Amsterdam, which normally fills the 10 p.m. Tuesday spot. New Amsterdam has begun production on its third season but doesn’t yet have a premiere date.
Transplant has put up decent ratings numbers thus far and is among the most successful of the jumble of acquired and holdover shows networks have aired this fall while production on their scripted shows ramped up amid the coronavirus pandemic. It’s averaging 5.58 million viewers and a 0.7 rating among adults 18-49, including a week of delayed viewing.
Nurses stars Tiera Skovbye, Natasha Calis, Jordan Johnson-Hinds, Sandy Sidhu and Donald MacLean Jr. Executive producers are Ilana Frank, Linda Pope, Vanessa Piazza, Adam Pettle, Jocelyn Hamilton and Tassie Cameron. Julie Puckrin is co-exec producer.
